Interior Doors - The Expert Opinion

Over the course of the last few weeks, we’ve discussed the use of the interior door in your home’s décor.  We already know that the interior door makes for a great focal or selling point, but you don’t have to take our word for it.  Recently, Design Quarterly Magazine published an article covering just this subject.  So today we’ve decided to pass along some advice from top designers concerning the use of interior doors in your home.

According to Mitchell Toews, No longer the matronly housedress but now imbued with the cachet of the “little black cocktail dress.” So long as that cocktail dress is healthful, sustainable and architecturally authentic’.

‘For many designers — and the clients they represent — interior doors’ value as a design element has slowly diminished in recent years. No longer the attention-grabbing “wall furniture” of the classical period and unlike their contemporary hardwood kin in floors and cabinetry, wooddoors have been largely commoditized.  For many, a door is just a door.  But to those in the industry — and for a rapidly growing number of astute practitioners in the design and building community –doors have been rediscovered as a ‘haute’ commodity in interior design.’

On the commercial front, innovative door designs are achieving strong market penetration. Designs like “sketch face” door skins (akin to inlaid furniture with wood veneers running at opposing directions) provide a winning combination of innovation, striking appearance and well-chosen materials.

‘By creating a flat, recessed panel, door designer combine the traditional look of a three panel door — the classic choice in popular arts and crafts or craftsman-style homes — with a monolithic door slab that is exceptionally stable and resistant to deflection, paint cracking and many of the other characteristic weaknesses associated with stile and rail doors. The residential and light commercial markets are embracing the new look and strong pent-up demand is evident as designers and building owners await the release of these authentic new designs.’

We hope that hearing a little of what expert designers have to say about the use of interior doors in interior design will give you the motivation and the inspiration to change the look and feel of your own space through the addition of architectural interior doors.  After all, your home is your castle, you should do your best to make the most of it!

Home Decor Ideas

Home décor and decorating is a fun way to bring personality and style into a home, and it does not have to cost extravagant amounts of money or time. When considering home décor, it is important to think of the things that will most reflect one’s own taste.  And the first step to anyhome decorating is to plan out a path of action before actually making any purchases.  Here are some tips on quick and easy home decorating:

  • Start with a blank canvas. One of the easiest ways to own a room is to repaint the walls. If one’s personality and sense of style is calm and classic, they may choose to paint a soft cream or tan or even a pale yellow.  But for a little flair, burnt oranges and dark reds can really add drama to a room.  Many paint dealers offer online visualizing programs where it is easy to pick the right color by actually seeing the paint on walls.
  • Less is often more when it comes to the details.  Instead of choosing several small objects to accentuate a room, choose a few key items that will enhance instead of clutter an area.  One focal item in a central location can bring much impact and visual interest.
  • Mixing up furniture pieces can add impact and style without causing a room to become too boring.  Consider visiting a shop that allows the purchase of individual pieces or an antique store to mix and match furniture.
  • Make the space livable.  For home décor that one will truly enjoy, the space needs not be an art piece.  Make sure the space is comfortable and is a place to relax and enjoy.  Remember, it is a home, not a museum.
  • Do not forget the doors.  Often neglected, interior doors do not have to be plain and standard.  There are many choices for the interior door to add interest and style to a home.  One can choose solid, smooth finishes if they would like to hang a small item on the door. Traditional six panel doors give the impression of a classic, timeless look.  Other styles to consider are five and eight panel doors, or even louvered doors for thresholds leading to a kitchen or dining room. Available in a number of different woods, interior doors can be left natural for a rustic look, or can be painted any color to add flair to a room.

There are many ways to add personality to home décor, and it is just a matter of picking the right pieces and colors, and planning out the design beforehand.
